Green Globes Rating for VA Medical Clinic Building 86

The Building 86 VA Medical Clinic, located in Walla Walla, Washington, just earned two Green Globes ratings from the Green Building Institute! The project is a major renovation of an existing three-story, 50,000 SF historic building, located at the Jonathan M. Wainwright Memorial VA Medical Center. The program encompasses ambulatory healthcare services, including primary care, radiology, prosthetics, gait analysis, and a sterile processing department.

The project consisted of selective demolition of interior hazardous materials abatement, including floors, walls, ceiling, and mechanical equipment; demolition of interior walls and ceilings, exterior windows and doors, and flat and pitched roof areas. The scope included new interior partitions, flooring, and ceilings, as well as new mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire alarm, and communication systems. Historic preservation included replacing exterior windows and doors to match the original fenestration, selective brick and mortar restoration, and new roofing.

The improved envelope performance, new LED lighting with daylighting controls, high-efficiency HVAC system, and 15 kW rooftop photovoltaic array resulted in modeled energy savings of approximately 35% compared to the ASHRAE 90.1-2010 Appendix G baseline. Low-flow fixtures contributed to an estimated 33% reduction in potable water consumption.

Along with providing the MEPF/T design services, Säzän Group was the overall Green Globes champion for the project, provided technical guidance to the design team and the contractor, and managed the overall certification process.
